Honouring Dr. Jean-Michel 'JM' Lavoie
Dr. Jean-Michel Lavoie, affectionately known as JM, was a respected medical oncologist, researcher, mentor, and advocate whose impact on patients and colleagues was felt across British Columbia. Beloved by patients and deeply respected by those who worked alongside him, JM was known for his compassion, integrity, fierce intelligence, and unwavering commitment to doing what was right, even when the path was difficult.
Originally from St-Honoré, Quebec, JM pursued a lifelong love of learning, earning a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering before studying medicine at McGill University. Following postgraduate training in Internal Medicine in Vancouver, he specialized in Medical Oncology, focusing on genitourinary cancers. Throughout his career, he combined excellence in research with a profound dedication to patient care, helping people navigate some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
JM worked at BC Cancer centres across the province, including Victoria, Vancouver, Surrey, and Prince George. No matter where he practiced, he left an indelible mark on patients, trainees, and colleagues. He believed that advocacy for patients extended beyond treatment, encompassing education, research, quality improvement, and meaningful system change.
To honour JM's extraordinary legacy, BC Cancer Foundation has established the JM Lavoie Memorial Endowment Fund. Income generated by the fund will support the annual JM Lavoie Award for Patient Advocacy and Compassionate Cancer Care, recognizing emerging medical oncology trainees who exemplify the values that defined JM's career.
The award will celebrate individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to patient advocacy through compassionate clinical care, patient-centred research, quality improvement initiatives, education, system leadership, or other work that meaningfully improves the experiences of people living with cancer.
This fund is a deeply personal initiative led by colleagues and friends who witnessed firsthand JM's dedication to patients and his profound influence on the oncology community. Through this endowment, future generations of medical oncologists will be inspired to carry forward his example of compassion, advocacy, and excellence in cancer care.
